After leaving Arizona, and two big holes in the ground, we headed for Albuquerque, New Mexico (again) to meet up with Phil's moms, Pat and Paula. Even though we drove through town at the right time, after spending 7 years at the Canyon, city driving almost made me wet myself. (And I hadn't seen nothin' yet...wait until I get to my post about Denver.)
But we arrived at Balloon View RV Park safe and sound. Ah, the memories. That was the first RV park Phil and I had stayed at in ABQ nearly 12 years ago. We reminisced about the drunk hooker who needed a ride, and the flat tire we got on the RV there (maybe the john was mad we gave his "date" a ride home...we just can't be sure.) It seems like the owners tried their best to upgrade, but the city had grown up around them and it just gave me the heebie jeebies. It didn't help that Pat took us about 10 minutes away to show us the park they really like, which was a magical oasis comparatively. When I asked her, "What the hell?"she said she wanted us closer to her house. Um, thanks? I'll forgive her, though, since she cooked me a delicious steak dinner while we were there.
We didn't have much time to spend, but we got the chance to see where Paula was working, which is Rio Grande Nature Center State Park. It's a little slice of wilderness that almost makes you forget you're in a big, paved-over city. And it had turtles, which pushes it way up in my estimation.
Can you believe this place is in the middle of Albuquerque? Me neither!
Next stop...Colorado (or so we thought)
